Soundbar Buying Checklist and Fit Calculator

Measure the space, check the connections, then take your saved list shopping.

1. Check the physical fit

All measurements in inches. Starting values are an example; replace them with yours.

Your fit check

Bar is narrower than the TV

4.0 inches on each side when centered.

2.0 inches remain below the screen.

Next: check the model’s required top and side clearance.

Choose a soundbar that fits the room

A TV’s advertised size is its diagonal. It does not tell you the width of the TV body or the gap under its screen. Measure both before choosing a bar. A bar that is wider than the TV may still work, but check the shelf, its supports and the look you want.

Our calculator subtracts the bar width from the TV width and halves the difference for a centered bar. It also subtracts bar height from the gap under the screen. Measure that gap from the surface where the bar will sit. A zero gap leaves no spare space. These two checks are separate from the clearance required by the speaker’s design.

Leave upward- and side-firing drivers open. A shelf that holds the bar may still block its sound path. For example, the Sonos Arc Ultra guide calls for at least 4 inches between the top of the bar and the TV when placed below it. Use the instructions for your own model, rather than applying that figure to every bar.

Trace the audio path before buying

Draw the path from each source to the TV and bar. With ARC or eARC, TV audio can travel back to the soundbar through the marked HDMI port. Check both devices for support and use the right socket; a spare HDMI input is not always an audio return connection. HDMI’s eARC guide explains this return path.

Write down the formats each part supports. An Atmos badge on the bar alone does not prove that every app, cable path or source will deliver Atmos. Check the TV’s output settings and the bar’s input instructions. If sources plug into the bar, count those inputs and check the video features passed through to the TV.

For music, check the exact streaming service and connection you want. Bluetooth, Wi-Fi and a maker’s multi-room system serve different needs. Try the same phone and service you plan to use, and check whether setup needs an app or account.

Count every speaker in the package

A soundbar package may mean one bar, a bar and subwoofer, or a larger set with rear speakers. Compare the included items before comparing prices. Wireless speakers may still need a nearby power outlet. Check the manual for each separate unit and plan its cable route.

Listen to a familiar spoken scene at your usual volume. Check that you can follow speech from your normal seat, then try music and a busy movie scene. If the system has sound modes, compare them too. A louder shop demonstration is not the same as an evening in your room.

If you are still deciding between a bar and separate speakers, use our soundbar and surround system guide. Once you have a shortlist, print this plan and check the return terms before ordering.

Questions before checkout

Does a wider bar mean better sound?

Width tells you how much room a bar needs. It does not give a sound quality score. Compare the exact models with familiar speech and music, then check that the one you prefer fits.

Can I put a soundbar inside a cabinet?

Check the exact bar’s placement guide. A cabinet can block upward- or side-firing speakers. Keep drivers and the remote sensor clear, and allow the space the maker specifies around the unit.

Should the bar match the TV’s screen size?

Use actual body widths and the space available on the cabinet. The screen diagonal cannot tell you whether the bar will fit between the TV feet or leave the remote sensor clear.

What does the calculator save?

Your four measurements, checked items and custom checks stay in this browser on this device. Use Print your plan for a paper or PDF copy. Reset clears the saved plan and restores the example.

Your next step

Finish the list with measurements from your room and the model’s manual. Then compare soundbars with the right connections and speaker package for your setup.
