Comment: I found Dr. Heckmann to be extremely thorough and my TKR surgery was excellent & pain free (I never needed any pain pills for pain). I was able to walk up stairs the day after surgery, walk without a walker by week 3 and a cane by week 5. I am beyond most post-surgical patients that have TKR according to my PTs at week 8. The scar is minimal and very thin and almost healed which is amazing since I am a diabetic. I feel Dr. Heckmann is an outstanding surgeon and excellent doctor. I highly recommend him, his team, Dr. Park (anesthesiologist) and the outpatient team @ Verdugo Hills Hospital for total knee replacement. Thank you Dr. Heckmann and I will be scheduling my other TKR very soon!!!

Comment: Dr. Heckmann literally saved my leg after two botched surgeries! He had to do a total knee replacement, eradicate osteomyelitis from my knee,, and replace/repair four ligaments!! I was literally in so much pain for two and a half years - the tibia bone/long bone had detached from the knee He is not just a phenomenal doctor, he is a phenomenal human! He is generous with his time! His staff is professional and kind and they are ALL top notch! I do not know if I would have my leg without him! He is the BEST! I will be forever indebted to him and his amazing staff who literally walk and talk you through everything! You will never find a better surgeon than Dr. Heckmann! I had to constantly ask him if he was still taking my case because it was so terrible. He cleaned up a horrendous mess! AMAZING! I am truly blessed! Thank you Dr. Heckmann! Comment: I would like to start by saying Thank you to Dr. Heckmann for his attention to my hip issues, his listening to my concerns and execution of the surgery to perfection. I researched hip replacements for over a year before choosing Keck and specifically Dr. Heckmann. My search led me to a well known midwest medical facility, a local and recommended surgeon and a co-worker who had a successful outcome at Keck. I had some concerns about the hip replacement not being the only source of my issues. Dr. Heckmann listened to all of these concerns and questions and thoughtfully considered each one. In the end I chose Dr. Heckmann and Keck as a result of the consideration of my sometimes repetitive questions and the reports from my co-worker regarding how well it all went. I am very happy about the choice. I was able to return to my job in two weeks and function fairly normally in about four weeks. . Additionally the staff at Keck was helpful and positive throughout the pre opoperative visits, surgery day and post operative visits. Thank you all very much. Bill Culp

Comment: I became extremely ill in December 2019 with a deadly staff infection that went directly to joint replacements in my right knee, both shoulders and left big toe. When I got to Keck, the surgeries I needed took place in 2 consecutive days. The surgery to remove the old prosthetic took about 10 hours. The doctor who placed the prosthetic decided to make sure that it would never have to come out. Well, it did need to come out. Dr. Heckmans expertise and dedication successfully removed it and placed antibiotic spacers and rods to begin the healing process. During my in-home physical therapy, the therapist did not follow instructions. This resulted in my rods breaking and needing to be replaced. This was done in March 2020. Again I received phenomenal care. I finally got my knee replaced in October 2020 and I began walking in February 2021. The care during my initial hospital stay and all subsequent telemed and in-house appointments and phone calls showed the dedication and personal care that Dr. Heckman, his staff including Noemi, Lisa, Lynn and others continues to be phenomenal. If anyone was to ask me if I know of a good surgeon for knee problems, I would have to say I dont know of a good surgeon - but I DO know of a GREAT surgeon. The knowledge and expertise of Dr. Heckman has resulted in me having a life today. This illness was a life or death situation. Dr. Heckman not only saved my limb but also my life. If someone does not believe in God or miracles, all I need to do is stand up and walk because I am a miracle thanks to Dr. Heckman, his staff, the nurses, and all of the employees of the hospital. I have never received such attentive care as I have during my surgeries at Keck. The dedication of Dr. Heckman and staff continues to amaze me. I owe my life to Dr. Heckman. His frustration and inability to help generated his referral of me to USC/Keck. I was blessed that Dr. Heckmann decided to take me on when nobody else would or could. Following surgeries to rid me of infection and stability of the hip I can now walk, tie my shoes and rest comfortably relatively pain-free and I am only 2 months post-op.Dr. Heckmann has been a true Godsend and I could not be happier with my experience at USC/Keck an give them my highest recommendation. Comment: Hip and knee replacement surgery is a serious matter. Dr. Heckmann is one of the best in his field and I am grateful to have found him. I was in bad shape, but now I am feeling confident that I will resume my active lifestyle within a few more weeks, without any setbacks.Dr. Heckmanns surgical approach outperformed even my extremely high expectations. I am fairly young and very active. A sedentary lifestyle is not for me. I needed to be sure I had a proven surgeon to get me back up and moving.I contracted an infection that traveled from my cervical spine to my hip and other extremities. This posed atypical complications, but Dr. Heckmann was more than prepared for the challenge. He and his assistant, Lisa Fujimoto, are a synchronized team. They both listened carefully to my concerns and worked together almost intuitively to put together a strategy to get me back up and on my feet, pronto.It was a six-hour surgery due to the extent of the infection, however, Dr. Heckmann cleared the infection from my entire femur. He placed a temporary spacer infused with antibiotics in place of my hip.2 hours after I woke up from surgery, Dr. Heckmann had me up and walking. He and Lisa visited me daily to check my progress and answer any questions.Dr. Heckmanns nurse, Lynn Zawacki, acted as my front line. She, too, visited me daily and answered all of my aftercare questions. She remained my point of contact after hospital discharge and averted a number of possible crises when I offhandedly mentioned anything out of the ordinary.Although I was a more complicated case, I was off to the races by the time I was discharged because Dr. Heckmanns work was meticulous and his team gave me the tools I needed to make a successful recovery. My recovery time was fast and clean.Speaking of clean, my incision was extremely fine and faded considerably in just three months.Dr. Heckmann and his team stayed in close contact with me. They were easily accessible, though I am not sure how they can respond so quickly, given the number of other patients. They make me feel like I am their only patient.Just a week before I was to have the spacer removed and replaced with the permanent hip, I mentioned to Lynne that I had some pain in my hand. She immediately conveyed the information to Dr. Heckmann. Within hours, he referred me to one of the best hand surgeons in the field to investigate what he suspected to be an infection in my hand.Dr. Heckmann was correct, and within two days of my MRI, I was rushed in for surgery not for a hip replacement, but to remove the infection from my hand. I would have had for more severe problems had my casual observation gone unnoticed, and given my laissez-faire attitude about it, I am surprised Lynne and Dr. Heckmann caught the critical nature of my hand pain.I am now 2 weeks out from my hip replacement surgery, as I write this. I am pleased to report that within three days after my discharge from the hospital, I no longer needed to take pain meds. I simply have no pain. I am walking (on crutches) a mile a day, as of this writing (split into two separate .5 mile walks). My hip is totally functional. Dr. Heckmann and his team are just an email or phone call away if I need them, and wow, they are super supportive!The hips Dr. Heckmann uses are state of the art, and he is masterful in his craft. Height-wise, My legs are perfectly matched, despite the high likelihood a hip surgery could have left me with a shorter leg. This surgeon and his team are the gold standard in their field. Before you decide to go with any other surgeon, do yourself a favor and meet with Dr. Heckmann first. I am so glad I did.
